On Thursday, July 25, Pericles Center for International Legal Education held a free one-hour webinar on the Law of the Sea, UNCLOS, and “the legal implications of receding coastlines for coastal states' maritime zones,” an announced topic in the 2025 Jessup Moot Court problem. Taught by well-known international maritime law expert Dr. George Murvanidze, who has graciously volunteered his time to help Jessup participants, this webinar provided valuable insights to jump start the preparation for this year’s competition.
Dr. Murvanidze is a distinguished expert with a strong background in both academia and practical experience in the field. He holds degrees from Tulane University and Cambridge, and has over 30 years of experience practicing maritime and admiralty law. He is a member of the London Association of Maritime Arbitrators, and a frequent judge in the Russian Jessup competition.
During the webinar, Dr. Murvanidze explained the basics of the law of the sea, and particularly the mechanisms of maritime boundary setting, and the participants gained a deeper understanding of the legal framework governing maritime zones and the potential challenges posed by receding coastlines and more.
